Dear Potters, Artists and friends,
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Stan Clarke has passed away at the age of 96. We would like to send our condolences and best wishes to his family.
Having in a large part founded and fostered our ceramics community, Stan began his art career with a love of painting and in 1948 he and his wife Jean began their passion for clay. Since then, Stan helped to establish the pottery department at UBC and formed Greenbarn Potters Supply among his many life achievements. He selflessly took the time to help us with our glaze problems, he repaired all of our kilns, and it was Stan who is responsible for bringing some of the first commercially available clays to market in BC.
Stan enjoyed working with Greenbarn and our ceramics community until he was 92 years old. He did everything, from digging his own clay & glazes, repairing wheel motors, all the way to researching and assembling his own tools and equipment. Stan passed along all of his knowledge freely and we have all benefited from his giving nature. Living a life immersed in the arts, Stan had a passion for painting, pottery and wood turning. He was active and able for all of his 96 years. To live a life as rich and passionate as his is something that we can all hope to aspire to.
Stan gave so much of his time to all of us as a business owner, teacher, potter, technician, friend and mentor. We have been fortunate and blessed to have you be part of our lives.
